November 2011 Lessons
We learned how to write a friendly letter and practiced using gmail accounts to send email to our teachers. We continued to review internet safety skills.
Grade 4
We continued to review the Fiction section by having students go to the shelves and find books by various authors and then put the books in alphabetical order by authors last name. We also read the book Alpha Betti by Carlene
Morton. As we read the book we alphabetized different things that Betti had to put in order such as items in her closet, kitchen, bedroom. We also viewed the video the Fiction Puzzle and discussed the different genre realistic, classic, Newbery Award Winner, Adventure, Mystery historical, and science fiction
Grade 3
We continued to work on Using Atlases. We also learned about Arctic animals. American Indians, Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery. We reviewed parts of a book.
Grade 2
We learned about the 300 section by exploring the holidays Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Day of the Dead. We also learned about Money and jobs, which are also part of the 300 section. We also touched on the 900 section by learning about Sacajewa, Lewis and Clark, and the Corps of Discovery.
Grade 1
We learned about the 500 science section as we explored the Lifecycles of Butterflies (Insects) and Frogs (Amphibians). For American Indian Month we read The story of Jumping Mouse, How Raven stole the sun, and The Rainbow Crow. We also learned about Migration and other animal kingdom family members including reptiles, fish, and Mammals.
Grade K
We learned about Trains by reading the following books: The little Engine that could, Freight Train, Dinotrain,and the Little Red Caboose. We sung train songs and learned the parts of a train: Engine, boxcar, and caboose.

June 2008 Media Happening Grades K-5
Kinder Day
We watched a short DVD to learn about Catch the Reading Bug Summer Reading Program at the Union City Library. We also watched a short video called How to behave in the Library and learned about media center rules, We walked around the media center and had a tour. We also got to move around and sing a song called did you ever go fishing and did movement activities. ( Standards 1.1.5 Understands how to follow library procedures, 1.1.6 Understands difference between school library and public library).
1st Grade

Grade 2 Media
We continued our map skills by learning about the two ends of the world: The North Pole or Arctic and The South Pole or Antarctica. We viewed the following website
Enchanted Learning Antarctica and Enchanted Learning Arctic
We talked about why animals in the Arctic are usually white in color and we also reviewed the countries and continents near the Arctic and the ocean near Antarctica.
We also watched a video EyeWitness Antarctica . We stopped during the video to answer general knowledge questions and after the movie we constructed a Venn diagram to compare and contrasts how the two poles were alike and different.

Grade 2 Music
We watched a Silver Burdett Ginn Music video about Singing games. We played "The French Musician" and "Here comes Valerie" and practiced Pantomiming different instruments such as the guitar, violin,harmonica, drum and others. Music standards completed were: 2.2 Sing age-appropriate songs from memory, and 3.2 Sing simple songs and play singing games from various cultures.
Grade 3

Grade 5
We reviewed plagarism that we learned in the Weekly Readers Crime Fighting Canines Unit buy using the I-SAFE Donny the Downloader program. This program is a featuring fast-paced animated videos starring themisadventures of Donny. Donny is a 14-year old who’s tech-savvy, but unaware of thebigger picture of why illegal downloading hurts the same performing artists andsongwriters whose music he loves. The program centers on the negative reactions fromthe other kids and adults in his life who he tries to impress with his access to supposedly“free” music, while demystifying the process of how music is created.In addition to the animated "Donny" segments, the assembly also features compellingv ideo segments that introduce real-life, 17-year-old aspiring music creator, Sonya Bender. The videos follow Sonya as she meets with music creators, producers andpublishers to get an unfiltered perspective on how illegally downloaded music negativelyimpacts their ability to make a living from being creative. May Happenings Grade 1-5
Mrs. Coppini and Mrs. Morris-Wong set up the display for Hillview Crest. The following classes participated in the 2008 YAF and received certificates of participation. As follows: Kinders [Room 1AM & PM Mrs. Fogel and Mrs. Morneau, Room 2 AM Ms. Baumback, and Room 3AM Mrs. Kemp, Grade 1 Room 6 Mrs. Coppini (as usually the fairytale puppets were one of the highlights of the Fair), Grade 2 Room 13 Ms. Pederson, Grade 3 we had 100% grade level participation ( Room 18 Mrs. Ly, Room 19Mrs. Hodgson, Room 25 Mrs. Manha, Room 28 Mrs. Catson, Room 30 Mrs. Keane, and Room 31 Ms. Huber), also 100% participation from Grade 4 ( room 20 Ms. Leung, Room 26 Ms. Lieu and Room 29 Ms. Hill) and 5th grade Room 39 Ms. McIntosh and Room 40 Mr. Speakman).
All classes also viewed a DVD from the Union City Library that introduced the 2008 summer reading program entitled "Catch the Reading Bug for students in Grades K-6. Graduating 5th graders were encouraged to consider becoming a Kid Power volunteer at the Union City Library during the summer.
Grade 1
We continued to review fiction and nonfiction and learned about the 700-799 section (Arts, Music, sports) We read the book and viewed the video for Camille Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. This allowed the students to hear different musical instrument sounds, see different musical instruments, and think of music books being in the 700 section. (Standard 1.3.1 Understands difference between fiction and nonfiction and 1.3.6 locates fiction and nonfiction in a variety of formats).
We also celebrated National Bike Safety month by reading David Shannon's Duck on a Bike and viewing a movie called "I'm no fool with a Bicycle". Since Memorial Day falls on the last week of May, we viewed a video on Memorial Day and also learned about the Challenger space shuttle disaster and the first teacher in space , Christa McAuliffe.
Grade 2 Media
We spent this month learning about the atlas, which is a book about maps. We saw a video called The Animated Atlas . We had the following books read to us: Me on the Map by Joan Sweeney and There's a map on my lap: all about maps by by Tish Rabe and Aristides Ruiz. We talked about the difference between a city/town, state, and country. We also learned what a continent was and looked at pictures of all 7, the four oceans, and we also learned how to identify difference symbols on a map. We also practiced some skills using the primary atlas from Rand McNally. This tied in nicely as many of our 2nd grade classrooms were doing Flat Stanley activities. (Standard 1.2.2 Identifies parts of a book: table of contents and page numbers, Standard 1.2.4 Understands the general organization of an Atlas).
Grade 2 Music
We read the book and viewed the video for Camille Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. We identified the different instruments and families by picture and sound.(Standard 1.5 Identify visually and aurally individual wind, string, brass, and percussion instruments used in a variety of music).We also learned about the Voice family and talked about different singing styles in a choir.
Grade 3 Media
We already knew that Fiction books were books that were not true and that books in the easy and 398.2 section were examples of fiction books. We were introduced to the chaper book section. We reviewed that many chapter books may be hard to us to read and we need to open the book to the middle and use the five finger rule. We also viewed a Media Mania Fiction Nonfiction video. If 5 or more words are too hard for us to read, then we need to select another book. We also learned that all chapters books are arranged in Alphabetical order by Author's last name and we practiced putting cards in Alphabetical order and also lining up by last name in Alphabetical order.
We continued to work on using an encyclopedia to answer questions.We also were introduced to another Reference book called the Almanac. We viewed a video called All about the Almanac and learned that an Almanac is a reference books all about facts and statistics. We also got to practice using both the index and table of contents in an Almanac to find answers to questions.
We completed the following Media and Information literacy standards: 1.2.3 Identifies the parts of a book: dedication, glossary, index, and table of contents;1.2.4 Identified the general organization of a print dictionary, theasaurus, encyclopedia, and almanac; 1.3.1 Understands the difference between fiction and nonfiction; 1.3.4 Identifies Reference Materials; 1.5.1 Learns that the fiction section is organized alphabetically by the author's last name, 1.5.2 Identifies the call number in the fiction section as the author's last name alphabetized to the first letter, 1.5.3 Alphabetizes to the second letter to locate books by call number; and 2.1 Identifies and compares characteristics of fiction and nonfiction.
Grade 4
Students continued to work on reference worksheets that we have been working on for the past few months. We also were introduced to the Big Six reserach skills through the website Big Six Kids. We also listened to a book and cd-rom called Rappin’Ronni, Research Rat,
by Michael and Valerie Charbeneau. We practice some scenarios that we could use big six steps such as deciding what movie theater to go to and how to make ice cream sundaes. We also review a past animal project that was done which can be located at 5th Grade Animal Project 2003 We also reviewed all nonfiction and reference books plus magazines that we could use to find animal resources and the students worked with the 4th grade teachers in the classroom on animal projects.
The following media and information standards were completed: 1.3.4 Identifies Reference materials, 1.3.9 knows and locates general contents of the reference section, 1.3.12 Identifies appropriate sources for classroom assignments and personal use and locates them idependently, 1.4.2 Uses Dewey Decimal system to locate resources independently, 1.6.3 performs a basic search by title, author, and subject using an automated library catalog (CATS),1.9.9 Uses a variety of printand digital reference materials to locate information, and1.9.13 Uses scanning and skimming skils to locate information.
Grade 5
We also practiced District Technology Standards 3D Using email with teacher for instructional purposes, 4D Sending and replying to email, and 5D using email.
Students also learned how to change their password and how to make a signature.
We also discussed that our email account is owned by New Haven Unified School District and talked about what we can and can't send via district email. We also learned that email is a priviledge and not a right (District Technology standards for Grade 5B 1 and 2).
We also reviewed plagiarism as we heard the story When Marion Copied: Learning about Plagiarism By Brooke Berg and Nathan Alberg. We did not get to go into citations in great deal but we talked about to be sure to make a reference page and to list title, author, publisher, place published and copyright date for books: include volume, title, name of article and pages for Encyclopedia:
and list name of website and webaddress for websites. We also were shown how just typing in a copied sentence from a website a teacher can find that you plagiarized and did not do your own work. We also went over Cybersmart manners; respecting the law which can be found at CyberSmart: Whose is it anyway?(Standards 1.9.23 records author, title, and other citations elements systematically while accessing information sources and 8.1 Respects copyright and fair use.)

Grade 4 and 5 Media Happenings April

Grade 4
Students are still working on reference centers on encyclopedia, online card catalog (CATS), Almanac, and thesaurus. They are completing the following standards:
1.2.4 Understands the general organization of a print dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia, atlas, almanac
1.3.5 Identifies reference materials
1.3.9 Locates and knows general contents of the reference section
1.9.9 Uses a variety of print and digital reference materials ( dictionary, atlas, thesaurus, encyclopedia, almanac) to locate information.
1.6.1 Understands the general purpose of the automated library catalog
1.6.2 Uses computer software graphical elements and navigation tools (e.g. buttons, icons, and fields) to search automated library catalog 1.6.3 Performs a basic search by title, author, subject, and keyword using the automated library catalog
For encyclopedia centers, students are either reading an article on California and answering questions using a time line or finding the answer to a question in a Heinemann First Encyclopedia , recording volume and page number, and writing the answer in a complete sentence. We are also making use of the thesaurus feature of
www.dictionary.com and practicing finding synonyms that fit properly into various sentences. Those doing Almanac centers are using the index and table of contents of the World Almanac for Kids 2004 edition to find answers to facts on countries, animals. and computers. Almanacs are becoming so popular that they are a favorite for the students to check out even old editions.
Grade 5
We are continuing to practice getting information on the 50 United States by doing scavenger hunts using the World Alamanac for Kids 2004 edition and Toucan Valley 50 states fact cards also with the Internet sites www.50states.com and Enchanted Learning
(Standard 1.2.4 Understands the general contents of an Almanac, Standard 1.3.5 Learns location of source types, Standard 1.3.11 Locates relevant sources for class assignments and personal use independently)
We also practiced District Technology Standards 3D Using email with teacher for instructional purposes, 4D Sending and replying to email, and 5D using email. All students in Room 36, Room 39, Room 40, Room 41 and Room 42 have had pracice using email. We also viewed the Netsmartz Kids video on why it's important to change your password and the students are using the options feature in Groupwise to change their passwords.
We are also continuing to learn about Plagiarism and Internet and Digital Piracy by using Weekly Readers Crime Fighting Canines Unit.
Crime Fighting Canines The students are learning about plagiarism, intellectual property, digital piracy, copyright laws, Internet piracy, where they can go for legal downloads, and Lucky and Flo, the Motion picture Association of America (MPAA)'s Crime fighting canines. ( Standard 8.1.1 Understands the purpose of an Intellectual common and fair use, and why plagarism, violating copyright and illegal or unethical use of information are unacceptable., Standard 8.1.6 Understands the value of an intellectual commons, as well as the consequences of Plagarism for self and society)
We have used the Motion Picture Association of America site and view some clips about the high cost in fine that can happen from downloading movies and games illegally. We also learned about what sites its safe to download movies at.

April Grades 1,2,3 CYRM nominees



We spent time listening to and discussing these three books. Grade Three did Readers theater plays for these 2007-2008 Primary Nominations. (tandard 5.1.1 Understands the purpose of Childrens and Young Adult book awards (California Young Reader medal)
Grade 1 continued to review the difference between fiction and nonfiction and was introduced to the 600-699 Technology section ( human body, transportation, gardening, pets, cooking, buildings)(Standard 1.3.1 Understands difference between fiction and nonfiction and 1.3.6 locates fiction and nonfiction in a variety of formats).
Grade 2 was introduced to the reference section of the media center. We watched the video Media Mania: reference and read the book Mr. Wiggle looks for answers. We discussed why reference books can't be checked out and talked about dictionaries, atlas, almanac, encyclopedia, and thesaurus. We plan to explore the atlas further since many of the second grade classrooms are doing Flat Stanley projects (Standard 1.3.9 knows general contents of the reference section).
For each CYRM nominee books that we read, 3rd graders had to identify the title, author, illustrator, title page call #, publisher, copyright date and dedication
(Standards 1.2.1, 1.2.2, and 1.2.3). We also reviewed www.dictionary.com to use an online dictionary and thesaurus (Standard 1.3.5)

Grade 2 Music
We had a visit from Mr. Dennis Finnigan, one of the children's librarians at the Union City Library. Mr. Finnigan spoke about programs that the Union City Library will be offering to help the kids learn about different instruments and appreciate them. We also were introduced to folk dancing and got to see what a line dance, square dance, and circle dance were. We got to try a Mexican dance called la raza. We also continued to review the Instrument families through listening to CD's and playing Instrument Bingo. (Standards Music 1.5 Identify visually and aurally individual wind, string, brass, and percussion instruments used in a variety of music. Standards Dance 3.1 Name and perform social and traditional dances from various cultures)
