This program is a featuring fast-paced animated videos starring themisadventures of Donny. Donny is a 14-year old who’s tech-savvy, but unaware of thebigger picture of why illegal downloading hurts the same performing artists andsongwriters whose music he loves. The program centers on the negative reactions fromthe other kids and adults in his life who he tries to impress with his access to supposedly“free” music, while demystifying the process of how music is created. In addition to the animated "Donny" segments, the assembly also features compellingv ideo segments that introduce real-life, 17-year-old aspiring music creator, Sonya Bender. The videos follow Sonya as she meets with music creators, producers andpublishers to get an unfiltered perspective on how illegally downloaded music negativelyimpacts their ability to make a living from being creative. We had 6 days of STAR testing ( 3 in April and 3 in May), so some classes did not get to visit the media center for 2 weeks. The highlight of May was the District Young Author Fair held on May 22 at James Logan High School. This year featured author Dean Pitchford and he talked about his book for tweens The Big One-oh.

Mrs. Coppini and Mrs. Morris-Wong set up the display for Hillview Crest. The following classes participated in the 2008 YAF and received certificates of participation. As follows: Kinders [Room 1AM & PM Mrs. Fogel and Mrs. Morneau, Room 2 AM Ms. Baumback, and Room 3AM Mrs. Kemp, Grade 1 Room 6 Mrs. Coppini (as usually the fairytale puppets were one of the highlights of the Fair), Grade 2 Room 13 Ms. Pederson, Grade 3 we had 100% grade level participation ( Room 18 Mrs. Ly, Room 19Mrs. Hodgson, Room 25 Mrs. Manha, Room 28 Mrs. Catson, Room 30 Mrs. Keane, and Room 31 Ms. Huber), also 100% participation from Grade 4 ( room 20 Ms. Leung, Room 26 Ms. Lieu and Room 29 Ms. Hill) and 5th grade Room 39 Ms. McIntosh and Room 40 Mr. Speakman).

All classes also viewed a DVD from the Union City Library that introduced the 2008 summer reading program entitled "Catch the Reading Bug for students in Grades K-6. Graduating 5th graders were encouraged to consider becoming a Kid Power volunteer at the Union City Library during the summer.

Grade 1

We continued to review fiction and nonfiction and learned about the 700-799 section (Arts, Music, sports) We read the book and viewed the video for Camille Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. This allowed the students to hear different musical instrument sounds, see different musical instruments, and think of music books being in the 700 section. (Standard 1.3.1 Understands difference between fiction and nonfiction and 1.3.6 locates fiction and nonfiction in a variety of formats).

We also celebrated National Bike Safety month by reading David Shannon's Duck on a Bike and viewing a movie called "I'm no fool with a Bicycle". Since Memorial Day falls on the last week of May, we viewed a video on Memorial Day and also learned about the Challenger space shuttle disaster and the first teacher in space , Christa McAuliffe.

Grade 2 Media
We spent this month learning about the atlas, which is a book about maps. We saw a video called The Animated Atlas . We had the following books read to us: Me on the Map by Joan Sweeney and There's a map on my lap: all about maps by by Tish Rabe and Aristides Ruiz. We talked about the difference between a city/town, state, and country. We also learned what a continent was and looked at pictures of all 7, the four oceans, and we also learned how to identify difference symbols on a map. We also practiced some skills using the primary atlas from Rand McNally. This tied in nicely as many of our 2nd grade classrooms were doing Flat Stanley activities. (Standard 1.2.2 Identifies parts of a book: table of contents and page numbers, Standard 1.2.4 Understands the general organization of an Atlas).

Grade 2 Music
We read the book and viewed the video for Camille Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals. We identified the different instruments and families by picture and sound.(Standard 1.5 Identify visually and aurally individual wind, string, brass, and percussion instruments used in a variety of music). We also learned about the Voice family and talked about different singing styles in a choir.

Grade 3 Media
We already knew that Fiction books were books that were not true and that books in the easy and 398.2 section were examples of fiction books. We were introduced to the chaper book section. We reviewed that many chapter books may be hard to us to read and we need to open the book to the middle and use the five finger rule. We also viewed a Media Mania Fiction Nonfiction video. If 5 or more words are too hard for us to read, then we need to select another book. We also learned that all chapters books are arranged in Alphabetical order by Author's last name and we practiced putting cards in Alphabetical order and also lining up by last name in Alphabetical order.

We continued to work on using an encyclopedia to answer questions. We also were introduced to another Reference book called the Almanac. We viewed a video called All about the Almanac and learned that an Almanac is a reference books all about facts and statistics. We also got to practice using both the index and table of contents in an Almanac to find answers to questions.

We completed the following Media and Information literacy standards: 1.2.3 Identifies the parts of a book: dedication, glossary, index, and table of contents;1.2.4 Identified the general organization of a print dictionary, theasaurus, encyclopedia, and almanac; 1.3.1 Understands the difference between fiction and nonfiction; 1.3.4 Identifies Reference Materials; 1.5.1 Learns that the fiction section is organized alphabetically by the author's last name, 1.5.2 Identifies the call number in the fiction section as the author's last name alphabetized to the first letter, 1.5.3 Alphabetizes to the second letter to locate books by call number; and 2.1 Identifies and compares characteristics of fiction and nonfiction.

Grade 4
Students continued to work on reference worksheets that we have been working on for the past few months. We also were introduced to the Big Six reserach skills through the website Big Six Kids. We also listened to a book and cd-rom called Rappin’Ronni, Research Rat,
by Michael and Valerie Charbeneau. We practice some scenarios that we could use big six steps such as deciding what movie theater to go to and how to make ice cream sundaes. We also review a past animal project that was done which can be located at 5th Grade Animal Project 2003 We also reviewed all nonfiction and reference books plus magazines that we could use to find animal resources and the students worked with the 4th grade teachers in the classroom on animal projects.

The following media and information standards were completed: 1.3.4 Identifies Reference materials, 1.3.9 knows and locates general contents of the reference section, 1.3.12 Identifies appropriate sources for classroom assignments and personal use and locates them idependently, 1.4.2 Uses Dewey Decimal system to locate resources independently, 1.6.3 performs a basic search by title, author, and subject using an automated library catalog (CATS),1.9.9 Uses a variety of printand digital reference materials to locate information, and1.9.13 Uses scanning and skimming skils to locate information.

Grade 5
We also practiced District Technology Standards 3D Using email with teacher for instructional purposes, 4D Sending and replying to email, and 5D using email.
Students also learned how to change their password and how to make a signature.
We also discussed that our email account is owned by New Haven Unified School District and talked about what we can and can't send via district email. We also learned that email is a priviledge and not a right (District Technology standards for Grade 5B 1 and 2).

We also reviewed plagiarism as we heard the story When Marion Copied: Learning about Plagiarism By Brooke Berg and Nathan Alberg. We did not get to go into citations in great deal but we talked about to be sure to make a reference page and to list title, author, publisher, place published and copyright date for books: include volume, title, name of article and pages for Encyclopedia:
and list name of website and webaddress for websites. We also were shown how just typing in a copied sentence from a website a teacher can find that you plagiarized and did not do your own work. We also went over Cybersmart manners; respecting the law which can be found at CyberSmart: Whose is it anyway?(Standards 1.9.23 records author, title, and other citations elements systematically while accessing information sources and 8.1 Respects copyright and fair use.)

We also had some fun watching the following videos at Netsmartzkids Tunes (District technology standards 5B 1 and 2 Social, Ethical and Human issues).

Grade 4 and 5 Media Happenings April

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5_bVqnXfUG8/SCFFP1eJxUI/AAAAAAAAAPA/9HR_WpRe1tc/s320/badge.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197511583316165954" />
Grade 4

Students are still working on reference centers on encyclopedia, online card catalog (CATS), Almanac, and thesaurus. We are also making use of the thesaurus feature of
www.dictionary.com and practicing finding synonyms that fit properly into various sentences. Those doing Almanac centers are using the index and table of contents of the World Almanac for Kids 2004 edition to find answers to facts on countries, animals. and computers. Almanacs are becoming so popular that they are a favorite for the students to check out even old editions.

Grade 5

We are continuing to practice getting information on the 50 United States by doing scavenger hunts using the World Alamanac for Kids 2004 edition and Toucan Valley 50 states fact cards also with the Internet sites www.50states.com and Enchanted Learning
(Standard 1.2.4 Understands the general contents of an Almanac, Standard 1.3.5 Learns location of source types, Standard 1.3.11 Locates relevant sources for class assignments and personal use independently)

We also practiced District Technology Standards 3D Using email with teacher for instructional purposes, 4D Sending and replying to email, and 5D using email. This superhero searches for the Lost Wreck of the Sieve as the boy makes a game of doing the dishes, and later in the bathtub, he conquers the Mysterious Toes that are stealing his pet, the brave little Scrubbing Brush. These are just a few of the action-packed adventures played out by the boy and his new toy that may not be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, but can vanquish all manner of villains lurking around the house. Mini Grey’s story in words and pictures is an irresistible invitation to the private world of a child’s play.

We voted for our favorites. In the good old days, when looking for answers, we could head for the library to read an encyclopedia or check out a few good books. Now, thanks to the Internet, we can tap into knowledge from more than a million sources that changes on a minute-by-minute basis.
A downside of this information swell is that not all of the information we can access is accurate or indeed even relevant to our purpose. We need to be able to separate-out what is useful to us from all the information that is now available! To help New Haven students’ bridge this gap; our district has adopted an Information Literacy model of the Big6 Grade 4-12. Some people call the Big6 an information problem-solving strategy because with the Big6, students are able to handle any problem, assignment, decision or task. Find out more about the Big6 at the website: http://www.big6.com/kids.

Big6 stands for
1. We also are hearing many different stories to learn about parts of a book such as call #, spine. title. author, illustrator ( Standard 1.2.1).

Some of the topics and books that we have covered for the month of January are: New Years Day, calendar ( reviewing months, days of the week, seasons, night and day); and Introduction to Martin Luther King's life reading simple biographies and learning why we celebrate the holiday. We also talked about the Presidential election and introducted voting for the California Young reader Medal books and read A Giant hug and talked about the postoffice and mailing letters. (Standard 5.1 Learns about Children's authors and Illustrators and the purpose of Children's book awards.)

Grade 2
The 2nd Graders have completed learning about both the Fiction (not true) and Nonfiction (true) sections of the media center. (Standard 1.4.1 and Standrad 1.4.2 Understands the basic organization system of the ten Dewey Decimal classes and how to locate resources independently). We had a lot of fun learning about Mummies made in Egypt and that mummies can be found in both the 932 History and Geography section and 393 getting along section.

We talked about the California Young Reader Medal Books and started reading I wanna Iguana We also read some factual Iguana information from Animal Printouts to meet Standard 2.1 Locating and Understanding Information from Nonfiction text.

We also were introduce to the biography section when we learned about Martin Luther King. (Standard 1.3.8 locates general contents in biography section.

Grade 2 Music

We are still exploring the Instrument families and are learning about the huge woodwinds and brass families. We used an old story called Brother John and the Orchestra and got to see what an old LP record and filmstrip looked liked. We also are reviewing sounds of Instruments through San Francisco Symphony Kids Instruments of the Orchestra The kids can see pictures and listen to instruments sounds

Dallas Symphony Orchestra kids

We are also using various Silver Brudett Ginn Music and music videos plus sheets from Enchanted learning so that the students understand and appreciate what the Instrument looks like and sounds like.

Grade 3
Standard 1.2.4 Understands general Organization of a Dictionary
Standard 1.3.9 Understands general contents of the Reference Section

We watched the media mania video on reference and also read Mr. Wiggle's knows the answers. The types of book in the reference section are: Dictionary, Thesaurus, Encyclopedia, almanac, and atlas. In the HVC media center, reference books are located behind the checkout desk. We can't take them home because: 1) they are too heavy, 2) they are too expensive, and 3) they get used a lot.

We read the book The Boy who loved Words by Ron Schotter. We learned that dictionaries help us find what words mean, how to spell words, how to pronounce words, and how to divide words in to syllables. We learned that dictionaries are arranged in alphabetical order and when we use a print dictionary we use the words on the top of the pages called Guide words to help us find the word. We practiced using print dictionaries to find words using guide words. We can find dictionaries that we can take home in the 400 Language section.

Standard 1.2.5 Identifies online terms and their uses
We learned how to turn on the new IMACS and use the browser Firefox. Several students are still working on the series Fiesta to review our knowledge of parts of a book. They are also learning how to identify bordering countries and bodies of water. They are also exploring religion, how to say greetings in our language, holidays. crafts. recipes, and songs from other countries. This will also familarize them with the 900-999 History and Geography section and learn how to use the table of contents and read Nonfiction for detail and facts.

We also are learning about and reviewing reference books that we learned about in grade one such as the Encyclopedia. ( Standard 1.3.9 locates and knows general contents of the reference section). We are practicing reading an article on "California" from the Student Discovery Encyclopedia and answering questions about the state we live in. (standard 1.2.4 Knows the general organization of an encyclopedia. Well I look up the CA frameworks for Grade 2
Grade 2 Framework music
Oh wow Standard 1.5 Identify visually and aurally individual wind, string, brass, and percussion instruments used in a variety of music.
That is something I can actually do.

I am using the following websites to teach the second graders the different instruments
Enchanted Learning Lots of great coloring pages and songs

San Francisco Symphony Kids Instruments of the Orchestra The kids can see pictures and listen to instruments sounds

Dallas Symphony Orchestra kids

I also have been using silver burdett gin music videos and videos of the different instruments and I just bought a listening game called Orchestra Bingo.
I even found some great music lesson plans worksheets at
Instructor Web and of course media books from the music section Dewey 784-788.

I also was able to cover some other standards
Apply Vocal and Instrumental Skills
2.1 Sing with accuracy in a developmentally appropriate range.
2.2 Sing age-appropriate songs from memory.
2.3 Play rhythmic ostinatos on classroom instruments.
by using the Silver Burdett Ginn Curriculum and some percussion instruments and the kids did learn about beat and rhythm.

Now Room 12,13 and 16 have a real music teacher and I just just teaching one music class room 17. We just finished learning about the percussion families, rhythm and beat. For room 17 , we will now spend a few weeks learning about the string family.

What are grades 4 and 5 doing in Media Sept and Oct?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5_bVqnXfUG8/Rx7O1JwKPGI/AAAAAAAAAMs/5KtFs3xMSiY/s320/dewey.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5124760838540508258" />

Standard 1.1 Knows library procedures for circulation and equipment
1.3 Understands difference between fiction and nonfiction
1.4.1 Understands the ten major classes of the Dewey decimal system
1.4.2 Uses dewey Decimal system to locate books independently
1.5.1 Learns that fiction section is arranged alphabetically by authors last name
1.5.2 Identifies call number in fiction section as authors last name alphabetized to the first letter
1.5.3 and 1.5.4 alphabetizes to the second and third letter to locate books by call number

In order to acccomplish these standards, the students have used the following

Websites

Do We really Know Dewey?

Dewey Challenge Game

Do the Dewey Game

Gettting to know the Dewey Decimal System

Books
The Shelf Elf Helps out

"I've got your number" Library Comics

Dewey and the Decimals

Videos

The Sharp Wits Lure of the Library

The Sharp Wits Dewey Decimal Delimma

Media Mania Fiction Nonfiction

What is a Media center?

Games

Book Spine Bingo

Dewey Match

Lets Do the Dewey

Dewey Dog : I have a dogs with bones 000,100,200,300,400,500,600,700 800, 900, Fiction and Biography.
